One-year memorial and annual memorials
The one-year memorial and those that follow, up to seven years. The same observance, kept year after year.
The one-year memorial brings back the people who came at forty days. After that, year by year up to seven, the meal narrows to the family. For many families it becomes a habit: the same day, the same room, the same menu.
At one year, people come again
The one-year memorial is the second largest, after the 40-day one. From two years onward, the meal is usually family only.
It can be kept the same every year
If you like, we keep last year's menu and repeat it. You only tell us the date and how many you are.
Fasting or not, depending on the day
The fixed date of the memorial falls differently against the fasting calendar each year. We check together and pick the right menu.
The one-year memorial and those that follow
The one-year memorial is the second largest, after the forty-day one. The people who came then return: relatives, neighbours, colleagues. From two years onward, the meal usually narrows to the family and those very close.
It is kept year by year up to seven. After seven years the memorial is no longer held as a separate meal — those who wish continue to remember at Moși and on the Saturdays of the dead, without gathering people around a table.
The same day each year, but a different menu
The day of the memorial is fixed — the date of death — but the fasting calendar moves from one year to the next. The same day that fell outside a fast last year may fall inside one this year. That's why the menu can't be settled once and for all.
What we do in practice: we check together where the day falls and, if needed, convert last year's menu into a lenten version, keeping the courses as far as possible. Sarmale stay sarmale, only the filling changes.
It can be repeated year after year
For many families the annual memorial becomes a fixed habit: the same day, the same room, the same menu. If you held the meal with us last year, we keep the composition and repeat it — you only tell us the date and how many you are.
It's the simplest order of all: nothing about the courses needs discussing, only the number confirmed.
Frequently asked
What families ask us
Up to which year are memorials held?
The usual observance runs to seven years. After that no separate meal is held — those who wish continue to remember at Moși and on the Saturdays of the dead.
How do I find out whether the day falls in a fast?
Tell us the date and we'll check together. If you're still unsure, ask the priest holding the service — his word is final.
Can you make the same menu as last year?
Yes, if the meal was with us. We keep it and repeat it. The only case where it changes is when the day falls differently against the fasts than last year.
Do many people still come at two or three years?
Usually not. One year brings back nearly everyone from the forty-day meal; from two years onward it's family. The meal is much smaller.
